Project Overview
Cochran & Mann assisted Whiting-Turner Contracting Corporation in the construction of Towson University Science Complex. This higher education facility is 320,000 square feet of space dedicated to the study of all sciences. It includes 50 classrooms, a planetarium, an observatory, rooftop greenhouse, vivarium, 50 teaching labs, 30 research labs, eight lecture halls, 10 collaborative student spaces, and faculty offices.
The Cochran & Mann team, led by Senior Project Manager Charlie Turrell, was in charge of painting all the space in the five-story facility. High-performance coating systems were used throughout. Tnemec high build Epoxy performance coatings were used for the vivarium environments.
Challenges
This two-year project finished during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, posing multiple challenges for the Cochran & Mann team. The project was 40% complete at the onset of the pandemic. Overnight, the team worked with Whiting-Turner Contracting Corporation to enact new safety protocols that allowed everyone to continue working on the project. These adjustments included shifts in work hours, work schedules, and employee safety guidelines.
The Result
The Cochran & Mann team overcame the challenges posed by the pandemic to deliver a beautiful, state-of-the-art building on time. The new Science Complex’s updated technology and research space will inspire young minds to become the next leaders in STEM industries.
