Cochran & Mann was honored to be responsible in the transformation of a historic building at the University of Maryland, a place where champions were crowned and traditions were born, a building near and dear to the heart of many Terrapin alumni — Cole Field House.
What was once a rowdy basketball arena for decades became unused and silent after the team moved to their new stadium after the 2002 championship season. Cole Field House remained empty until the University decided to begin renovation in November of 2014.
Plans for the renovation included expanding Cole Field House to house a state-of-the-art football athletic facility and “to include the Terrapin Performance Center, the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance and the future home of the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”
The Cochran & Mann team was responsible for painting the facility and installing graphics to bring a cutting-edge look to the outdated arena. In addition to renovating the practice field, the first phase of the project also included the team offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, meeting rooms, and a 270-foot entrance tunnel.
Phase 2
The Cole Field House project is currently undergoing the next phase of its renovation and the Cochran & Mann team is fully involved. Phase 2 will include the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance, and the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Challenges
The University wanted to ensure the first phase of the new facility would be finished in time to show potential recruits for the following athletic year. To ensure this deadline was met, the Cochran & Mann team split into two 10-hour shifts per day to complete the project.
The Result
Cochran & Mann was able to successfully meet the recruiting deadline for the Cole Field House practice facility. Our team couldn’t be more proud of the final product design and the completed overhaul of the athletic space. This project required teamwork from all construction and design parties in order to create a unique space that will continue to impact Maryland athletes for years to come.
“The entire Cochran & Mann team was thrilled to be involved in a project of this magnitude and significance,” said Mike Cochran, Co-Owner of Cochran & Mann. ”The end product is a stunning state-of-the-art facility that will serve the University for generations.”
